Tooth removal typically leads to loss of bone that once held a tooth in place. This space (the socket) can rapidly shrink after the extraction, complicating future restoration of the lost tooth. A socket preservation procedure can greatly improve the appearance of your smile and increase your chances for successful dental implants for years to come. If your dentist recommended tooth removal, ask Dr. Medel if socket preservation is necessary. This is particularly important if you are planning on replacing the front teeth.
Ridge augmentation is performed to recreate the natural contour of the gums and bone (alveolar ridge) that were lost due to tooth extraction, trauma, periodontal disease or other reasons. Rebuilding the original height and width of the alveolar ridge may be required for dental implant placement or for aesthetic purposes.
The maxillary sinuses are empty, air-filled spaces that reside behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth. If the sinus wall is too thin, then this bone might not be able to support a dental implant. In these situations, a sinus lift procedure involves placing a bone graft which allows for bone growth over time, eventually making dental implant placement possible.
